As The Sun Sets On Hollywood Forever…
On days when I’m feeling pensive I like to go down to Hollywood Forever, gather my thoughts, take in the peaceful beauty & photograph the scenery.
As one of my dearest loves, Ben Graves, put it “It’s so peaceful here, but it really does remind you of how precious life truly is.”
I couldn’t agree more, and that day it’s exactly what I needed.
My last visit was 4-26-2010.
Enjoy my visions…

Forgiving Dr. Mengele…
I just now finished watching “Forgiving Dr. Mengele.”
I suspect it will not surprise you that I cried throughout it’s entirety.
What will surprise you is the reason I was crying.
I was not crying over the atrocities that Eva Kor endured as one of the Mengele Twins.
Everyone is more than familiar with many of those stories.
What I was crying over was this woman’s astounding strength, courage & power to overcome all that she had.
She is, by leaps and bounds, one of the most inspiring human beings that I have ever had the honor to learn about.
If every single one of us had even an ounce of this woman’s wisdom, strength and bravery this would be a far different, far better world.
I won’t downplay the fact that it’s so heavy & intense that I had trouble executing a single deep breath the entire time I was watching.
But you will learn and you will be inspired.
And you’ll come out of it a better human being.
If you can, please watch it.
It’s currently on Netflix Streaming.

Ivy Blue, Griffith Park And The Great Baby Bird Rescue…
The kitties and I had been lying back, reading about Ultra Violet, Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali while relaxing at Griffith Park all morning.
As would be expected after all my coffee & water consumption I had to use the restroom.
What are the chances that the exact stall I chose out of all the options, just happened to have a little baby bird, it’s eyes not even open yet, on the bare cement floor, kicking it’s tiny legs, struggling for life, after it had fallen from the nest embedded in the ceiling?
If you know me at all you know I couldn’t leave it there.
I grabbed a bit of paper from the roll & scooped the little muffin up into my safe, warm hand.
I then walked to the first building I saw where the lady instructed me to go to the ranger station.
When I arrived the nice ladies there told me that if they called animal rescue they would just put my little sugarpop to sleep, but there were a couple places that would take it & nurse it back to health if I were willing to drive it over.
You know I was!
So they called “Karen” from Los Feliz.
She answered, which the ranger said was very unusual as she generally had to leave a message.
I told her it must be fate…she agreed.
And Yay! “Karen” would save my lil cutie pie.
So I drove to this large, beautiful yet, unique home in gorgeous Los Feliz.
As I was driving the lil bird muffin started chirping in my hand!
It was SO Amazing!
I got there and had to be let in, as with most homes, especially large homes in fancy neighborhoods it was all fenced & gated off.
As the gated slowly opened I saw no one so I began walking up the driveway.
Luckily, this eccentric, very sweet woman dressed in what I can only describe as old time western wear, long, blue & white print, ruffled dress, white cowboy boots with long blonde ringlets in her hair walked out of the house & towards me.
She started rubbing it’s little head, took a look & said they all look like the same breed at this age.
Then she called to “Ralph” and said “The Baby Bird Is Here!”
I told her I hadn’t known if I should touch it or not so I wrapped in in the paper.
She called me a “Good Soldier” and said “It Feels Good To Save A Life, Doesn’t It.”
It did, of course, and still does.
Good Luck & Life my tiny, feathered cutie-pie. <3

Come On, Robin, To The Bat Cave! There’s Not A Moment To Lose!…
On The 18th I headed out to Griffith Park once again.
This time in search of the infamous Bat Cave!
I had done quite a bit of research before heading out and had prepared for a relatively long, somewhat rough hike into Bronson Canyon.
Much to my shock it was beyond cake getting there, even in the blazing sun & heat of a Los Angeles Summer Afternoon.
This was my second attempt at this particular little adventure.
The day before I had ventured out as well, only to find the trail cordoned off by police cars for the entire day.
In my mind I immediately pictured bloody corpses strewn about the trail & into the cave, as some mass murder or even a mass suicide had taken place.
As my logical mind persisted & finally took over I came to realize the less exciting but more realistic scenario of it being used as a filming location.
I’m not going to lie, it was a bit anti-climactic once I arrived but it was a beautiful day for a hike & it ended up taking me closer to the Hollywood Sign that I’d previously been.
So although my expectations were not met by the caves it was still an amazing experience on a beautiful day in my favorite park.
Enjoy my visions…

Bronson Canyon
Bronson Canyon, or Bronson Caves, is a section of Griffith Park in Los Angeles, California that has become famous as a filming location for a very large number of movies and TV shows, especially westerns and science fiction, from the early days of motion pictures to the present. Its craggy and remote-looking setting, but easily accessible location, has made it a prime choice for filmmakers, particularly of low-budget films, who want to place scenes in a lonely wilderness.
Location and History
Bronson Canyon is located in the southwest section of Griffith Park and is thus easily accessible from Hollywood. From Franklin Avenue, go north on Canyon Drive until the road ends for vehicular traffic at the parking lot for “Camp Hollywoodland.” At the right (east) side of the road is a small concrete bridge painted red. Cross the bridge and walk around the vehicle barrier, and follow the unpaved road, keeping left, for the short walk into Bronson Canyon.
In 1903, the Union Rock Company founded a quarry, originally named Brush Canyon, for excavation of crushed rock used in the construction of city streets. The quarry ceased operation in the late 1920s, leaving the caves behind. The caves became known as the Bronson Caves after a nearby street, giving the area its more popular name of Bronson Canyon. (The same street indirectly provided the stage name for actor Charles Bronson, who chose the name of the Bronson Gate at Hollywood’s Paramount Studios, which in turn derived its name from Bronson Street.)
Scenes of the main cave entrance are normally filmed in a manner that shows the entrance at an angle. This is because the cave is actually a very short tunnel through the hill, with the rear opening easily visible in a direct shot. The most well known appearance of the tunnel entrance is likely as the entrance to the Batcave in the Batman television series of the 1960s.

Another Day Another Griffith Park Adventure…
On June 8th I took yet another hike within my current natural, geographical, obsession.
On this particular day I accidentally happened upon the ruins of the old L.A. Zoo.
Amusingly I came upon it from behind, seeing the abandoned shack, then the cages from the back first so I had no idea what it actually was.
It was puzzling and mysterious because it was smack-dab in the middle of the woods.
The curiosity & magic of childhood discovery washed over me in dizzying bliss.
As I wandered further I found the original asphalt path then the front where most people begin the journey.
If you’re as big a fan of “Anchorman” as I am you’ll recognize some of the photos as locations from the “San Diego Zoo” Scene.
The trains are from “Travel Town,” which is a Transportation Museum within Griffith Park.

Ivy Blue, Bob Lizarraga & More Old Hollywood Than You Can Shake A Stick At…
(June 16th)
The original plan was to see “Splice” & grab a drink or two after.
That’s it.
What ended up happening was a magic-filled walk back in time to the days that Hollywood was golden…
When Bob arrived he asked if I was hungry.
I thought, sure, I could eat.
He said he’d never been to The Formosa Cafe so we headed over for dinner & drinks.
I love the Formosa Cafe.
It has oodles of ambiance and so much Hollywood History you could drown yourself in it.
Even if you’ve never heard the name there’s a good chance you’ve seen it in a film or photograph.
For example, “L.A. Confidential”…

Our next destination was our original destination.
After stuffing, albeit politely, our faces with delicious delicacies, we were off to “Grauman’s Chinese Theatre” to see “Splice.”
XXX
XXX
I had previously been to the Chinese 6 theatres, which are the new theatres at Grauman’s and I’d mistakenly assumed that’s where the film was playing.
I was absolutely delighted to discover that it was actually playing in the original theatre to which I’d never been!!!
We arrived early enough that we were able to look around and truly appreciate the breathtaking architecture & decor.
XXX

I really enjoyed the film.
It touched on a lot of frightening real-life possibilities but was also successful on a pure entertainment level.
However, I could have went forever without seeing my pretend future husband, Adrien Brody, doing “that” with “that.”
Of course the fact that it actually bothered me is further testament to it being a wonderful film.
I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet so I won’t say anything further.
Just outside the doors of the theatre are the famous hand & footprints of the stars.
I’ve lived here nearly 5 years but have never really perused it so we decided to look around a bit.
It’s surprising how tiny most of the female stars were.
Even more astonishing is the fact that I did the typical tourist thing & actually put my hand in certain handprints.
It mortifies me to ponder what was on my hand as I lifted it from the sidewalk.
I feel that it was worth the risk to find that my hands are the exact same size as those of Bette Davis!
After our adventure in germ-warfare we were still having far too much fun to return to our respective homes so we decided to go to The Roosevelt Hotel for cocktails.

XXX
We walked into a tiny dark bar to the side of the lobby and ordered drinks.
The first three I ordered the bartender couldn’t make because it was only fresh fruit drinks or beer so I told him to make me something fruity & sweet.
It was filled with fresh passion fruit & took him about 20 minutes to make but it was truly delicious.
When he handed it to me he said “It’s in ‘In Style’ Magazine!”
I couldn’t give a crap less that it’s in some fashionable magazine, as long as it tastes good but he seemed very happy about it.
XXX
XXX
Cocktails in hand we walked about the hotel discussing matters like the mirror you’re supposed to be able to see Marilyn Monroe in, the ballroom with the supposed portal and all the haunted rooms.
XXX
XXX
We finally settled outside on lounge chairs surrounding the pool.
We had arrived rather late in the evening so by the time we had gotten through our first drink the security guard came over and told us the bar and pool were closing.
I could have sat there all night surrounded by all of that Hollywood History and breathtaking beauty.
